• Uncoated paper has no coating on it and features a mild, flat sheen. It is most suitable when you need to write on the paper.  20 lb. bond copy paper is a common uncoated stock.
• Matte paper is a coated stock with a dull-gloss sheen.  Like gloss, it produces a high quality image due to the smoothness of the stock.  The difference between matte and gloss can be very subtle.
• Semi-gloss paper is a coated stock with a semi-gloss sheen.  Like gloss, it produces a high quality image due to the smoothness of the stock.  It tends to be more common in thicker weights.
• Gloss paper is a coated stock with a glossy sheen and generally produces a richer, fuller image than other finishes, making it the most common paper finish used in printing.

Paper thickness usually ranges from 20 lb. copy paper (.004 thick) to 16 pt. cover (.016 thick).  For reference, a credit card is .030 thick.

Most weights under .0075 are considered "paper/text" weights, while most weights above .0075 are considered "cover/cardstock" weights.

Common weights for flyers and brochures are 80 lb. or 100 lb. text.  Common weights for business cards are 14 pt. and 16 pt. cover.
